lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

argot excavates an unexplored corner of chicago house history. lab work 91-96 collects the work of chris ike and john kardaras, two chicago producers with few records to their names but a wealth of compelling unreleased material waiting in their archives. the compilation highlights the pair’s particular vision and musical breadth across 14 tracks, drawn from a cd-r given to steve mizek in 2010 that was recently rediscovered. lab work was remastered in it’s entirety by dietrich schoenemann, sounding much at home today yet intimately connected to a formative time in chicago house history.

for those of you wondering what adesse versions was doing at our heist boiler room this summer in london, the answer is here. the “push it along” ep for heist is adesse versions first appearance on our label and features 4 stunningly raw and warm originals, and an amazing remix by new york’s ambassador of funk: ge-ology, together with multi-instrumentalist marc de clive-lowe on keys. after having released numerous records for jackmaster’s numbers, local talk and toy tonics, we’re happy to welcome adesse versions to the heist family. when he sent us his demo’s we had the tough job to choose the right tracks, cause there were just too many. the selection on the “push it along ep” features what we feel are his purest work up to date. with only a small amount of elements, he manages to create such a big and warm sound, finding a great balance between gritty percussion, rich analog synths and funky sampling work.

massive attack release two brand new songs, ‘come near me’ and ‘the spoils’. both songs are written and produced by massive attack’s daddy g and collaborator stew jackson and feature vocals from ghostpoet (on ‘come near me’) and hope sandoval (on ‘the spoils’). these new songs follow january’s release of the ‘ritual spirit’ ep, which was written and produced by the band’s robert del naja and collaborator euan dickinson. the video for ‘the spoils’ stars cate blanchett and is directed by john hillcoat, best known for his directorial work on films such as the road, lawless and the proposition.

following their album save! aka colder & mutado pintado are back on dlm, with another deadly attack! kamikaze style. we ve been waiting a longtime for an i:cube remix. we ve been fans and friends since his debut and we love that he strayed from his more technoey recent work, as great as it is. this is full on psychedelia, almost rock in its approach. a trip, not a track. russia s great hope (not ivan drago), lipelis, hot on the wheels of his macdonald flack and the ack-ack pack pack remix delivers two radicals/tangents. police & robbers. they fly high, both in their own manner. rainy monday is dubbed out in space with that jungle screw feel. slowed down breaks that are all the rage with the yoof, apparently but lipelis takes it to another level. last floor his version of darkness in the middle is a trickster, you d think almost ambient kraut before you end up on an italo-piano-expansives beach.

yet more italians on optimo trax! jose manuel delivers 4 unique exotic, fourth world, tribal slabs of ritual music. a1, the great beast in outer space is actually an andrew liles track that jose has completely reworked and sprinkled his magick on. mr. liles is one of my favourite producers in the world, both for his solo work and for his input into my all time heroes nurse with wound. for those who know his work, having something by him that will work on a dancefloor may bring a smile to your face. thankfully i know him a bit and he was more than happy to grant permission for this to be released. a2, folklore is fourth world exotica reimagined for late night dance rites. aa1, ritual, is exactly what the title says it is. aa2, sisi leaves the dance floor completely and even though optimo trax is 100% aimed at djs, was simply too lovely to leave off.

new york experimentalists sheik n beik continue on form as they follow up records from japans keita sano, legowelt & xosar and jeffrey scott with a bold and atmospheric 12inch from jerry riggs & maxwell church a.k.a hermans. hailing from toronto - hermans specialise in their own brand of esoteric techno that lends them perfectly to a release on sheik n beik. their things change ep slots neatly into the catalogue with its blend of spooky melodies and analogue drum work. diana (how youve changed) kicks things off with an infectious vocal loop and juddering drum patterns. brooklyn’s max pask then follows up with his take on diana which sets 909 drums over a thick, burning acid line. endless toil then follows up with a tightly wound groove built with metallic whacks and frazzled, flexing synth tones. forget the past then brings the package to a thumping close as manic synth lines dart between crunching drums in another strong addition to sheik n beiks catalogue.

betonkust and palmbomen ii are back with their second collaborative effort. this time on the dutch pinkman label. six brand new tracks that seem a lot darker than their previous work. somewhere between belgian new beat from 1988 and the west coast sound of holland. a lo-fi nightmare that turns out to be reality. pounding drums, paranoid acid patterns and angsty out of control synth choirs.

originally released in 2002, here reissued as a remastered version tony allen talks about the album: after black voices and psyco on da bus albums, i came back with homecooking which was an album filled with guests. i brought in ty, who had remixed some of my work previously, to rap on the record, and damon albarn, who had already sung about me on music is my radar. since the early days ive been trying to find things that everybody will want to listen to. ive always been pushing afrobeat in different directions. heres another one again, another style, almost clean but still rough, raggedy and radical.

from the far future embodies a specific and vital time of detroit‘s techno production, going hand in hand with juan atkins’ work as infiniti, terrence dixon signed this album with a masterful hand.

the second ep, 1987s greenfingers, was their final recorded work and, according to hayward, its possible to hear the group atomising and preparing to go its separate ways within its grooves. the only this heat or camberwell now recording not to have been produced at brixtons cold storage studios, it was recorded as a diy exercise and – unusually for either of the groups – was not pored over laboriously for a great deal of time. the ep also saw the addition of a new member, maria lamburn, primarily on sax, whose element unknown was inspired by her experiences in the nuclear protest camp at greenham common. camberwell, in south london, pops up infrequently in pop culture. perhaps you know it from the camberwell carrot, the heroically sized joint smoked in cult movie withnail & i, or perhaps – if youre attuned to experimental music – you know of camberwell now. the group formed from the ashes of this heat, the art-noise group whose catalog was reissued on modern classics recordings in early 2016.

one more time we choose two little known gems for re-release on 45 rpm single. another single by the same group is pretty in demand by funk 45 collectors. these two sides are not that much known but they certainly deserve the same attention. while funky you is pretty good, uptempo funk, the b-side is the real beauty of this record. love come down is a fine example of chicago soul which has not been re-released yet. hopefully many people appreciate the work behind this release, from both the original musicians as well as those who are responsible for this high quality re-issue.

nachtbraker is back! its been a huge year for the amsterdam deep house juggernaut who returns to dirt crew with his all new and colorfully titled really ties the room together ep. constantly on the move, hes found time between touring throughout europe, asia and south america to continue to push his a-typical house sound forward with this years heist release and his quirky jam busy bee that was featured on our deep love 100 compilation. this three tracker is jam packed with bouncing club tunes and a whole lot of flange. things kick off with the title track really ties the room together. it twists and turns over an unconventional but irresistible groove, shimmying shakers, brass stabs and a serpentine riff work together creating a super tight dance floor cut. rew begins somewhere in deeper territory, suspense building beneath the clouds, a rumbling bass rolls in from over the horizon before a glorious funk guitar blows the whole thing wide open, letting the suns rays burst through and that familiar nachtbraker good time energy shine in. the rerub of rew is something altogether new from our deep house protagonist, a break beat and casual groove guide gently towards an ever intensifying acid trip. dont be fooled by the lovely deep chords, things get nasty in the end. its best to expect the unexpected from our adventurous resident producer, and this ep is no exception.

following his stunning everything is nothing ep, which kicked off the hubble telescope series for solar one music in 2015, luxus varta (aka emeric di paolo) is back with a new four track ep for french label, intramuros. ‘rosenhan experiment’ (named after david rosenhan’s famous study to determine the validity of psychiatric diagnosis, published in 1973 under the title “on being sane in insane places”) takes us on another electro trip into the human mind with paris the black fu from detroit grand pubahs once again making an appearance, on the track ‘losquato’. the ep opens with the wonderfully shimmering ‘wenn’ before luxus varta makes striking use of his background as a drummer on ‘lizzy’. ‘losquato’ is a playful addition with stripped back rhythms under paris’ story telling that bemoans a man’s work frustrations and resulting mental state (“i gave up therapy about a month ago. my therapist jumped out of a window”), while closer ‘tempsun’ is almost melancholy in its measured minimalism. recommended for lovers of drexciya and dopplereffekt.

without knowing it, you’ve probably heard kelly lee owens work over the past few years: the 27-year-old london producer contributed vocals and writing&#8239,,,,to several tracks on fellow uk techno wizard daniel avery’s debut lp, 2014’s drone logic, and she’s made waves with a pair of limited-release 12” singles showcasing her gifts for spectral, hallucinatory pop. on&#8239,,,,the “oleic” ep,&#8239,,,,her debut release on smalltown supersound, owens flexes her considerable muscle as a dance producer with four luscious, deeply satisfying slices of big-room electronic music.

this monster 1976 lp from nassau s munnings brothers aka beginning of the end is a stone cold classic. fact. well deserving of a place in any record collection! this, their second lp (with 1971s infamous funky nassau preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound a mixture of tough funk rhythms, bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. not surprising considering the band were one of the bahamas foremost musical outfits. the brothers musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of nat king cole and count basie at their fathers well known nightclub the cat and the fiddle, what we get on this lp however is not jazz, but lean, melodic soul music! original copies of this seminal lp can change hands for 100 s on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. the lp has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of miami s tk disco empire. now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. a truly classic album. sounding as fresh as it did almost 40 years ago. jump in the water!

opening things up, the sinister title track is a dense, winding affair built around staggered tribal patters and powered along with a brooding reese bassline. he/at’s “set openers” have become something he is known for and this is definitely one of his most dramatic. after that madness, “it’s impossible to describe the smell of a wet dog” strips things right down with subtly chaotic-timed rhythms and synth-work. kind of minimal...but not.
on the flip side, “a drama out of a crisis” is a straight-up new-meets-old techno stomper with early beltram-esq beats and modulated melodies, before the ep closes out with the rawness, “the man who made husbands jealous” is a tough acidic kind of work out with an infectious hook we think you’re going to like.

while producing the viscera trilogy, fango has tried to understand something about himself. in order to do this, he had to enter into his own body, just like dante entered hell, studying and analysing himself from the inside, diving through organs, guts and grey matter. did it work? yes and no, depending how you look at it. for sure, it helped him in the creation of 3 devastating and introspective eps, but a lot of questions are still unsolved. viscera part 3 is the last leg of a journey that disrupted your 2016 and marks the beginning of a new absurd phase for fango, but this is another story. for the time being we leave you with amnios, metacarpo and metulla. this is viscera 3/3.
